Rhys Hoskins apologizes after exchanging words with fan after strikeout

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Rhys Hoskins had a night to forget Monday. The slugger not only went hitless with two strikeouts during the contest, but he was also involved in a verbal back-in-forth with a fan.

Following Hoskins’ strikeout in the sixth inning, he could be seen exchanging words with someone in the stands as he went into the dugout. After putting his helmet down, Hoskins came back out to the top step of the dugout and continued jawing with the fan.

Why did Rhys Hoskins exchange words with a fan?

Hoskins was frustrated after a few tough at-bats. After he was called out on strikes in the fourth inning, Hoskins was nearly ejected after questioning umpire Joe West’s call. West took off his mask and seemed ready to make the move, but Hoskins walked away without saying another word.

His next time up, Hoskins struck out on a ball in the dirt. The ball got away from the catcher, but Hoskins hesitated for a while before running to first. He was thrown out on the play. As he walked to the dugout, Hoskins looked up and said something to a fan in the stands. He then placed his helmet in the dugout and went back to say a few more things to the person in the stands.

What did Rhys Hoskins say to the fan?

On-field microphones couldn’t pick up the exchange. But when Hoskins came out of the dugout the second time, it appeared he said something like, “You go hit.”

How did Hoskins respond after the game?

Hoskins apologized saying he was frustrated and that he should not have gotten into an argument with a fan. He took full responsibility, saying, “I was in the wrong.”

Hoskins has been much better lately

Monday’s game was a bit of an outlier for Hoskins lately. Ever since he’s returned from the disabled list after fouling a ball into his jaw, Hoskins has been dominant at the plate. In the 14 games prior to Monday, Hoskins was hitting .333/.431/.685, with five home runs.
