Rob Lowe is celebrating 29 years of sobriety from drugs and alcohol, and the actor is sharing his passionate story.

The Wild Bill star, 55, took to Instagram on Friday to announce his sobriety date.

“Today I celebrate 29 years of sobriety,” Lowe wrote. “Thank you to all those who have inspired me on this wonderful, challenging and life-changing journey.”

He added a passionate declaration, writing “If you, or someone you know, are struggling with alcohol or addiction, there CAN be a future of hope, health and happiness . And it comes one day at a time. #recovery #ItWorks.”

His post was applauded by his several famous faces, ranging from his St. Elmo’s Fire co-star Demi Moore, who wrote clapping and heart emojis, and model Naomi Campbell. Lowe’s brother, actor Chad Lowe, joked “Congratulations!!! Thanks for saving me a seat!!”

Perhaps the most meaningful comment came from Rob’s son Johnny Lowe, who wrote “So proud of you. Love you.”

Naturally, Lowe’s path to sobriety was a challenging one. The former Brat Packer made headlines back in 1988 when he videotaped himself having sex with a 16-year-old girl in an Atlanta hotel room. The incident occurred while he was in town to support Michael Dukakis at the 1988 Democratic National Convention.

On a recent episode of the podcast WTF with Marc Maron, Lowe joked about how in the late 80’s, the sex tape was devastating to his career, in contrast to the possible positive effects it would have these days.

“The real f*** up was that I didn’t wait 20 years later to do it where it would have helped my career,” Lowe told Maron. “1 billion percent ahead of the curve.”

All joking aside, Lowe told Oprah Winfrey back in 2011 that the sex tape incident actually benefitted his recovery from addiction and alcoholism.

“It ends up being the greatest thing that ever happened to me,” he told Oprah. “Because what it ends up doing is accelerating my alcohol [addiction] to where I finally get sober. I have been able to have the rest of my life that I’m so blessed with, which is now 20 years of sobriety.”

Lowe’s career did recover, and he went on to thrive in roles ranging from The West Wing to Parks and Recreation. He also thrived personally, marrying Sheryl Berkoff in 1991.
