These Rockford Peaches hockey sweaters are in a league of their own

The famous Rockford Peaches, one of the original teams in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, is hitting a major milestone in 2018. The team, and the AAGPBL itself, was originally founded back in 1943, which means that they’re celebrating their 75th anniversary this year. (The movie that made them a household name, “A League of Their Own,” celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2017.)

Seventy-five is a big number, and the community of Rockford, Illinois wants to celebrate their city’s rich sports history. Sportslogos.net reported on Monday that the Rockford IceHogs, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks, will be donning special Peaches-inspired uniforms on January 26 to commemorate this important anniversary.

That might be the coolest hockey sweater of all time. The front is almost an exact replica of the Peaches’ famous uniform, including the center logo, the buttons down the left front, the red belt with the thick loops.

The back features a continuation of the red belt, though the uniform’s accuracy ends there. Instead of the skirt (which was attached to the jersey in a one-piece uniform), IceHogs players will wear normal hockey pants. (It’s hard to blame them for that, since playing hockey in a skirt can’t be pleasant.) But that Peaches branded duffel bag is really sharp.

The Peaches uniforms are part of the IceHogs’ annual Pink in the Rink Night. Several of the sweaters will be auctioned off during the game, with the proceeds going toward breast cancer research. The IceHogs have also pledged that $5 from every ticket sold will go toward the International Women’s Baseball Center, which will be built next to the Peaches original home field in Rockford.
