Royal baby live: Announcement of new Prince's name expected today

It’s unknown whether the child’s name will be announced today, but Arthur, James, Philip and Albert are some of the bookies’ favourites.

Yesterday, gun salutes will sound across London to mark the arrival of the new prince. The traditional salutes will be fired from the Tower of London and Hyde Park at 2pm.

Gun salutes are used to mark every birth of a prince or princess.

On Monday night, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge left hospital with their son. The prince made his first public appearance just before 6pm cradled by his mother, around 12 hours after she was admitted to St Mary’s in Paddington and seven hours after she gave birth.

The tiny fingers of the newborn could be seen moving as they stood on the steps outside the Lindo Wing.

The duke, smiling broadly alongside them, said they were “very happy” and “very delighted”. Holding up three fingers he joked that he now had “thrice the worry now”.

Quizzed on whether they had decided on a name for their third child, the duke added: “You’ll find out soon enough.”

The Duchess appeared in front of hundreds of fans wearing a red Jenny Packham shift dress with a lace Peter Pan collar. The royal returned to the designer for her third time, wearing Jenny Packham dresses after the births of both Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Prince William then carried the baby, safely encased in his car seat, to the car before driving both his wife and child home to Kensington Palace.

The Palace had tweeted the arrival of the couple’s second son shortly after 1pm, stating the child was delivered safely at 11:01am, weighing 8lbs 7oz.

The Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry have been notified and are said to be “delighted.

George and Charlotte earlier met the newest addition to the Cambridge family after being brought to St Mary’s Hospital by William.

A confident Charlotte, who turns three on May 2, turned to wave at the photographers as she led the way up the steps holding the duke’s hand, while four-year-old George appeared more wary of the huge crowds of media.

William and Kate thanked the hospital for their care and the public for their warm wishes.

Kensington Palace said: “Their Royal Highnesses would like to thank all staff at the hospital for the care and treatment they have received.

“They would also like to thank everyone for their warm wishes.”

Here is how the day unfolded:

This morning, the world woke to the news that the Duchess had gone into labour and been admitted to St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London.

A tweet from the the Palace’s official Twitter account stated: “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London earlier this morning in the early stages of labour.

“The Duchess travelled by car from Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital with The Duke of Cambridge.”

It’s understood that the Duchess was admitted to hospital just before 6am.

Kate also gave birth to George, on 22 July 2013 and Charlotte, on 2 May, 2015, at the London hospital.

As is custom with the royal family, the Duke and Duchess kept the finer details of their pregnancy to themselves, choosing not to reveal the baby’s gender and exact due date. All Kensington Palace revealed in advance was that the baby was due in April.

The Duchess of Cambridge made her last public appearance before giving birth at church on Easter Day.
