What do the royals and Succession's Roy family have in common? Quite a lot, actually.
Yes, the Windsors don't have to worry about vying for the top job—their places in the line of succession were determined at birth. But, like the characters depicted in the HBO series, they are all members of a very unique family business. And, also like the Roys, the royals also grew up between country estates, being ferried to and fro by helicopter.
Longtime royal meme-maker Gary Janetti made this comparison explicit with a clever new video, which replaces the footage in the Succession intro sequence—largely flashbacks to the Roys' luxurious childhoods—with vintage videos of the royals. The results are definitely worth a watch.
It's hard to know if the royals themselves would get the joke, as there's no word on whether or not they watch Succession. They do, however, reportedly have a penchant for another prestige drama about a powerful family (albeit one that hits a little closer to home), The Crown.
Over the years, many senior royals have been said to watch the Netflix show. In 2017, Express claimed that Queen Elizabeth had watched the full first season ("Happily, she really liked it, although obviously there were some depictions of events that she found too heavily dramatized," a source said). Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as well as Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, are also reportedly The Crown devotees.
From there, it's not a far leap to Succession. And it's certainly one they should take—if only so they can answer the question, "Who is the royal family's Cousin Greg?"
