The Royal Family Is Now in Crisis After 'Inept' Handling of the Thomas Markle Situation

The drama with Meghan Markle's dad Thomas continually speaking to press-despite being asked by Meghan and Harry not to-is starting to become more than the royal family can handle-or so royal aides are telling the Daily Mail. Hours after Thomas's latest explosive interview started getting picked up by outlets yesterday, the Daily Mail's Richard Kay reported that some former and current aides say the situation is as bad as it is because the Palace mishandled Thomas from the very beginning.

An aide who worked on Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding called the handling "inept." The aide said, "The perception is that he was treated very much as an afterthought. No one went to visit him when the answer would have been to have someone fly out from London and explain to him how things were going to happen. Even after he started talking to the media it was not too late. When Kate’s uncle Gary found himself in the newspaper spotlight [Gary Goldsmith was the focus of headlines about alleged drug taking] he was brought into the fold, not excluded. He was told he would be invited to everything but that if he felt inclined to speak out and give interviews, we asked that he let us know in advance so that we would be prepared. No one seems to have thought of that this time."

The idea of having a leading PR figure act as an in-between was reportedly brought up after Thomas's Good Morning Britian interview but dismissed because that person was a former journalist, and Harry "does not trust the media and he would never have supported that idea," a source told Kay.

One aide thought that the royals should've invited Meghan's entire family to the wedding so they'd feel included and less inclined to make negative comments. Another believes it's too late for any in-between and that poor Meghan needs to go talk to her father and try to make amends (though it's debatable whether he actually deserves any final chances). "She clearly loves him enough to have wanted him at her wedding so she needs to go and spend time with him," that aide said. "Clearly there is an issue of trust...but he didn’t talk to the media for a long time earlier on."

On Friday, Express reported that Meghan was said to have told friends she had reached her limit of her dad using "emotional blackmail" to try and manipulate her. She has no current plans to talk to him because she is "deeply hurt," a close friend told Daily Mail, and can't trust Thomas to “keep their conversation private." Fair.

Sunday, The Sunran a similar report from a U.S. source. “Meghan loves Thomas and does want to maintain a relationship with him in the long run," that source said. "But at the moment she feels he needs a bit of space. She also wants to take a bit of time out. She is adjusting to married life and her new role in the spotlight. Meghan is hopeful that things will get better but it will take time. There is no quick fix."
