RuPaul was nominated for Best Reality Host alongside Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski and Jonathan Van Ness for Queer Eye, Nicole Byer for Nailed It!, Barbara Corcoran, Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner, Daymond John, Robert Herjavec and Kevin O’Leary for Shark Tank, Padma Lakshmi and Tom Colicchio for Top Chef, and Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman for Making It. And Drag Race was nominated for Best Reality Competition Program with The Masked Singer, Nailed It!, Top Chef, and The Voice.

When Ru won the Best Reality Host category before the actual ceremony, he dedicated the award to the late Chi Chi DeVayne and reminded everyone to vote. Ru said:

"I've always said, every time I bat my false eyelashes, I'm making a political statement. Well tonight, the only political statement I want to make is this: love. Love for our LGBT brothers and sisters, love for Black queens and brown queens, and love for the United States of America, where a little gay boy with nothing more than a pussycat wig and a dream can build an international platform that celebrates sweet sensitive souls everywhere...I'd like to dedicate this Emmy to one of my girls. Chi Chi DeVayne, may you rest in power and perfection."

And when he accepted the Reality Competition Program Award, Ru encouraged everyone to believe in the power of love no matter how disheartening things may be right now.

The iconic drag competition was also up against Amy Schumer Learns To Cook: Lunch Break And Pasta Night, Cheer, Kevin Hart: Don’t F**k This Up, and We’re Here for Best Unstructured Reality Program tonight, which ultimately went to Cheer.
