Samsung's new folding flip phone revealed in huge leak
New details about Samsung’s next folding phone – expected to be called the Galaxy Z Flip – have been revealed in a comprehensive leak.
German tech publication Winfuture uncovered fresh information about the highly-anticipated smartphone, revealing previously unknown specs, features and images.
The phone ditches the horizontal folding mechanism of the Galaxy Fold, which opens like a book, and instead opts for a vertical-folding design similar to the recently announced Motorola Razr.
It features a 6.7-inch screen that comes with "Ultra Thin Glass" to help protect it from the wear and tear that comes with opening and closing it multiple times per day.
Like the Galaxy Fold and Motorola Razr, it appears to come with a small front-facing screen that can be used to check notifications.
Inside the device, Samsung has put a top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage.
A 3,300 mAh battery is smaller than the dual capacity of the 4,380mAh battery in the Galaxy Fold, however the smaller size of the Galaxy Z Flip means real-world usage will likely be similar or better than its predecessor.
The leaked photos also reveal two rear cameras, which are expected to be a 12MP main lens and a 12MP ultra-wide angle lens.
The only major details not covered by Winfuture's leak are the price and release date of the device, though previous rumours suggest it will be unveiled at Samsung's Unpacked event on 11 February.
An official teaser video for the event includes square shapes similar to the profile of the folded Galaxy Z Flip and includes the tag line "Change the shape of the future".
Samsung does not comment on unreleased devices but the company previously hinted that its next folding smartphone would be a significant departure from anything that it has made before.
"This brand-new form factor that we're now exploring will not only easily fit in your pocket, but it also changes the way you use your phone," Hyesoon Jeong, Samsung Mobile's head of framework and R&D, said at the firm's 2019 developer conference.
Samsung was one of the early pioneers of foldable smartphones, first unveiling the Galaxy Fold in late 2018. It ran into a number of issues, however, and was forced to delay the roll out of the handset by several months.
Other smartphones expected to be announced at the Unpacked event include Samsung's flagship Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra.
