SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - Apr 10, 2014) - Special Olympics San Diego County Region (SOSD) is holding its annual School Games on Thursday, April 17 in partnership with Adconion Direct, a global leader in true cross channel advertising, and San Diego State University (SDSU). More than 200 athletes from seven schools are expected to participate in the event taking place at SDSU. Athletes will compete in soccer and soccer skills as nearly 200 volunteers from Adconion Direct cheer them on at one of San Diego's most exciting competitions of the year.
School Games are part of a growing effort to provide commensurate experiences for individuals with disabilities in the school setting. Students who often are not able or allowed to participate in athletic events are given the opportunity to train, compete and excel in the athletic arena.
"Special Olympics School Games highlight all that is best in our community. Teachers working together with local businesses and volunteers to empower and enrich their students," said Karen Terra, regional director of SOSD. "Students with and without disabilities should be given the chance to shine. School Games provide an avenue for students with disabilities to get that moment to compete, to hear the crowd cheer, throw their hands up in exultation. We are so grateful for our partners Adconion Direct and SDSU who have so generously provided the resources to make this event happen."
"Adconion Direct is committed to supporting the local community, and for the last three years, we have proudly sponsored this wonderful event. It's a life-changing experience not only for the athletes but for every team member at our company as well. To have the opportunity to cheer on and support these amazing, dedicated athletes is a humbling experience and an incredible honor. It's something we look forward to every year," said Kim Reed Perell, CEO of Adconion Direct.
The event is free and open to the public. Opening Ceremonies begin at 9:00 a.m. The competition will start at 9:30 a.m. Award ceremonies will be held throughout the day to honor the athletes as they finish competing. Each athlete who competes will receive an award.
