For the second year in a row, Scarlett Johansson is the best-paid actress in Hollywood.
Johansson, 34, topped Forbes' list of highest female earners with $56 million in pretax earnings from June 1, 2018 to June 1, 2019 – thanks largely to her role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
She earned an impressive $35 million back-end sum for "Avengers: Endgame," the highest-grossing film of all time, in addition to an eight-figure paycheck for her upcoming Black Widow spin-off film.
"Modern Family" star Sofia Vergara finished in second place with $44.1 million in earnings. Reese Witherspoon came in third with $35 million, right ahead of her "Big Little Lies" co-star Nicole Kidman, who earned $34 million.
The rest of the actresses making up Forbes' top 10 are:
- Jennifer Aniston: $28 million
- Kaley Cuoco: $25 million
- Elisabeth Moss: $24 million (New to the list)
- Margot Robbie: $23.5 million (New to the list)
- Charlize Theron: $23 million
- Ellen Pompeo: $22 million
But a massive pay gap remains between the highest-paid female stars cited by Forbes and their male counterparts.
The world's 10 highest-paid actresses made a combined $314.6 million, hundreds of millions of dollars less than the top 10 actors, who pulled in $588.3 million this year.
Even Johansson's $56 million payday would barley crack the list of Hollywood's top 10 highest-paid actors. (Dwayne Johnson topped Forbes' 2019 list with a whopping $89.4 million.)
"I think every woman has (been underpaid)," Johansson told Cosmopolitan in 2016. "But unless I’m addressing it as a larger problem, for me to talk about my own personal experience with it feels a little obnoxious. It’s part of a larger conversation about feminism in general."
She continued: "I am very fortunate, I make a really good living, and I’m proud to be an actress who’s making as much as many of my male peers at this stage."
