The nickname “Notorious R.B.G.” may be new, but Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has always been a trailblazer. In anticipation of International Women’s Day tomorrow, Magnolia Pictures has released the trailer for the documentary RBG, which had its world premiere earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. The film documents the journey of the 84-year-old judge and feminist icon from an immigrant neighborhood in Brooklyn to the highest court in the land, where she has become, in the words of Gloria Steinem, “the closest thing to a superhero I know.” Watch the trailer above.
“I became a lawyer when women were not wanted by the legal profession,” Ginsburg, who enrolled in Harvard Law School in 1956, explains in the trailer. As her law career took off, she became a fierce advocate for gender equality. “I did see myself as kind of a kindergarten teacher in those days, because the judges didn’t think sex discrimination existed,” she muses.
The film by Betsy West and Julie Cohen features interviews with Ginsburg’s political colleagues and contemporaries, including Steinem and Bill Clinton, as well as her biographers and the creator of the Notorious R.B.G. Tumblr. But the filmmakers also delve into Ginsburg’s personal life, offering interviews with her family and insights from her long marriage to the late Martin David Ginsburg. “He was the first boy I ever knew who cared that I had a brain,” says the judge — who may also be the only octogenarian to do a full-body plank on the big screen this year.
RBG opens in select theaters on May 4.
