Selena Gomez is Quitting Instagram

2019 gifted us with the return of a more vibrant Selena Gomez - the one we fell in love with back in the day. Sadly, we won't be graced with her (online) presence much longer. Again.

After taking a long hiatus to focus on her health, Selena Gomez came back to our Instagram feeds in the summer of 2019. For starters, after dealing with lupus and receiving an organ in a life-saving transplant in the form of a kidney, she deserved the break.

But can we just say how great it is to see her happy again? And posting these amazing throwback pics from the Barney era? The lyric teasers in the captions are just genius (it seems she's one for laying Easter eggs, too).

She Insta-teased us back in 2017 when she dropped little bits of "It Ain't Me," and again in 2018 with "Back to You." Of course, 2017 Sel-Go also gifted us with her producing of 13 Reasons Why. We're thankful for the content and message of the show, but it sure is nice to have this lighter version of her back in our lives...for now.

Her recent performance at the 2019 American Music Awards was a perfect semblance to her fire being refueled, transitioning from the heartfelt "Lose You to Love Me" into the upbeat "Look At Her Now." Amidst a very public split with he-who-shall-not-be-named in 2017, Gomez was named the most number one followed person on Instagram and still remains in the top five.

"People so badly wanted me to be authentic," Gomez told Vogue in 2017. "And when that happened, finally, it was a huge release. I’m not different from what I put out there. I’ve been very vulnerable with my fans, and sometimes I say things I shouldn’t. But I have to be honest with them. I feel that’s a huge part of why I’m where I am."

Since 2017, Gomez has taken various breaks from social media - long ones. Her most recent self-imposed timeout from social media happened in 2018 in efforts to be more present in her everyday life. But in keeping with her honesty streak, she has announced that she plans on taking another break following the release of her new album, Rare, on January 10th.

Yesterday, she told The Wall Street Journal that the sole reason she got back on Instagram in the first place was because of the impending music."I'm going to have to take it off my phone again soon,” she said in the interview." Despite the public only knowing her best friend as that of Taylor Swift, Gomez actually has a closet set of girl friends who aren't in the entertainment industry. These gal pals aren't famous, hold their own jobs, and keep her balanced to life off of the stage and out of the public eye.

Even if she leaves us once more, she is always a bright light of encouragement. Her social media breaks are really meant as a means of gaining mental clarity. She's always been open about being "one of us", and says that she has fallen trap to the comparison game - she would scroll through the 'gram, fixate and people who seemed to be glamorous/have a perfect life/and so and so forth. And if Selena can relate to that, we know we are not alone.

Have a good break. We'll be listening to Rare on repeat until you come back.
