Who Has Been Selling ATN International, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATNI) Shares?

Simply Wall St

We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So before you buy or sell ATN International, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATNI), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.

What Is Insider Buying?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.'

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At ATN International

The Chief Financial Officer, Justin Benincasa, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$453k worth of shares at a price of US$83.35 each. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$53.09. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels. The only individual insider seller over the last year was Justin Benincasa.

Justin Benincasa divested 10458 shares over the last 12 months at an average price of US$80.22. The chart below shows insider transactions (by individuals) over the last year. Does ATN International Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. ATN International insiders own 32% of the company, currently worth about US$271m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Do The ATN International Insider Transactions Indicate?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded ATN International shares in the last quarter. It's great to see high levels of insider ownership, but looking back at the last year, we don't gain confidence from the ATN International insiders selling.
