Shareholders in Esperion Therapeutics (NASDAQ:ESPR) are in the red if they invested three years ago

In this article:

Esperion Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:ESPR) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 28% in the last month. But the last three years have seen a terrible decline. To wit, the share price sky-dived 90% in that time. So we're relieved for long term holders to see a bit of uplift. But the more important question is whether the underlying business can justify a higher price still. We really hope anyone holding through that price crash has a diversified portfolio. Even when you lose money, you don't have to lose the lesson.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

Esperion Therapeutics isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last three years, Esperion Therapeutics saw its revenue grow by 6.7% per year, compound. That's not a very high growth rate considering it doesn't make profits. But the share price crash at 24% per year does seem a bit harsh! We generally don't try to 'catch the falling knife'. Of course, revenue growth is nice but generally speaking the lower the profits, the riskier the business - and this business isn't making steady profits.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 1.3% in the twelve months, Esperion Therapeutics shareholders did even worse, losing 84%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 13% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Esperion Therapeutics better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - Esperion Therapeutics has 4 warning signs (and 2 which are a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.
