Shareholders Are Thrilled That The Bisalloy Steel Group (ASX:BIS) Share Price Increased 250%

In this article:

When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. One great example is Bisalloy Steel Group Limited (ASX:BIS) which saw its share price drive 250% higher over five years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 12% gain in the last three months.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the last half decade, Bisalloy Steel Group became profitable. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. Indeed, the Bisalloy Steel Group share price has gained 200% in three years. During the same period, EPS grew by 33% each year. This EPS growth is lower than the 44% average annual increase in the share price over three years. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did three years ago.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Bisalloy Steel Group's TSR for the last 5 years was 338%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Bisalloy Steel Group has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 31% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 34% a year, is even better. Before forming an opinion on Bisalloy Steel Group you might want to consider the cold hard cash it pays as a dividend.
