SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- South Korea is asking companies and government agencies to cut power consumption during the summer after two nuclear reactors were idled to replace substandard parts.
It says Wednesday that state-owned companies and government agencies should reduce power use by 15 percent during summer. About 2,800 private companies including giants such as Samsung and Hyundai have been told to reduce power consumption by up to 15 percent in August.
The two reactors will be offline for several months to replace crucial cables after the company responsible for testing the equipment falsified results.
The government has raised its power shortage alert to the second level of a 5-level scale.
Korea Power Exchange said electricity reserves fell below 4 million kilowatts on Wednesday, the lowest level this year.
