Snowflake Boy: 10-year-old’s hair turns to ice after walking three miles to school in -9C

A 10-year-old boy has turned up to school with his hair frozen into icicles after walking three miles in temperatures of -9C.

Dubbed ‘Snowflake Boy’ online, he made the icy trek to sit his exams at Zhuanshanbao Primary School in the township of Xinjie in Yunnan Province, China.

He reportedly walked to school in temperatures well below freezing.

In the photo, the boy’s hair has gone completely white with the frost, while his eyebrows are also frozen. His cheeks are bright red after his long walk.

It was taken just as he stepped into the classroom at the rural school after walking 4.5km (2.8 miles) to get there.

Mr Fu said: ‘It was the first day of their final exams.

‘The temperatures dropped to minus nine degrees Celsius in about 30 minutes that morning.’

He said the boy lives far away from school and is known by his fellow pupils as something of a class clown.

The boy doesn’t live with his parents, who both work in larger cities to earn higher wages. He lives with his siblings and elderly relatives.

Mr Fu said the school provides him and other children with breakfast, but he added that their classrooms have no heating because of a lack of funding.

When the photo was shared online, many people praised the boy for his bravery in getting to school.
