Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Announce Elected National Board of Directors
INDUSTRY, CA--(Marketwired - Jun 5, 2013) - The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) announced today the 2013 National Board of Directors. The two-year terms of the newly elected board members will begin July 1st.
SHPE members elected Barry Cordero to the position of President and Yuliana Porras as Vice President of the National Board.
Cordero, a Principal Project Engineer at Medtronic, is currently finishing his term as SHPE National Vice President. During his term as VP, he assisted with reshaping SHPE's vision and mission and helped established SHPE's first strategic plan in many years. He also served as SHPE Region 6 Vice President in 2010. From 2009-2010 Cordero served as the professional development chair for SHPE and helped transform the "Management Growth Training" program from a purely soft skills event to a focused certification program.
"As we approach our organization's 40th anniversary, we should be proud of the accomplishments we've obtained and the organization we've become but I do not believe we have yet reached our fullest potential," said Cordero. "We must work together as one organization focused on achieving our vision statement through execution of our mission. I am fully prepared to work hand in hand with our CEO, Pilar Montoya, SHPE staff, committees, sponsors and our inspirational members to serve our community and make the difficult decisions necessary to embrace our fullest potential."
Yuliana Porras is a Chemical Engineer for the Bureau of Reclamation and a lifetime member of SHPE. She has held various leadership positions within the organization at all levels as a student and professional as well as on the National Board of Directors. Her major accomplishment as a student leader on the board was to establish a national award to recognize the future student leaders of the organization. As a professional leader she created the structure and process to effectively train the incoming regional and national leaders and was instrumental in the creation of the Regional Leadership Development Conferences held every year at each of SHPE's seven regions.
Four members have been elected to Region Vice President. They are:
Maria Reyes, Region 1. Reyes is a Production Engineer at Occidental Petroleum Corporation and a Lifetime Member of SHPE. She is concluding her term as Vice President of K-12 Development for the SHPE - Bakersfield Professional Chapter. She helped establish SHPE - Bakersfield in 2007 and worked with local high schools to create two SHPE Jr. Chapters in 2011.
Saul Solis, Region 3. Solis, a Staff Consultant at Impac Services, joins the NBOD after holding officer positions at the Boise State University student chapter and the Treasure Valley professional chapter. Saul was the Professional Chair for RLDC in 2012 for Region 3 and helped make it very successful.
Naomi Hernandez, Region 5. Hernandez, a Quality Program Engineer at Bell Helicopter, first became involved in SHPE nine years ago as a university student at Southern Methodist University where she completed her undergraduate and graduate degrees. Since then she has been an active member serving on various local, regional, and national SHPE committees including the SHPE DFW Conference, RLDC 5, and NILA.
Jay Flores, Region 7. Flores, an Associate Account Manager at Rockwell Automation, is excited to make his return to the SHPE National Board of Directors. In 2009 at the young age of 19 Flores was nominated to serve as the SHPE Vice National Undergraduate Representative. He was then elected National Undergraduate Representative by the membership two years in a row. In his three years of service, Flores feels that his role in reshaping SHPE's mission and vision are his proudest legacies. Flores hopes to use his background as a Rockwell Automation sales engineer to help build key relationships with supporters to help amplify the efforts to change lives and empower the Hispanic communities of the southeast.
