Sonic the Hedgehog is Racing To Build-A-Bear. Here's How to Get One.

To celebrate the (delayed) release of Sonic the Hedgehog, the Build-A-Bear-Workshop is releasing a brand-new plush version of the eponymous speedster.

The Overland, Missouri-based company’s latest take on the most beloved Sega character is a 17-inch royal blue plush with green eyes and, somewhat controversially, red feet. It’s weird to see Sonic without shoes, and for what it’s worth, longtime Sonic producer Takashi Iizuka even told Polygon that he doesn’t take off his shoes in canon.

You can still, of course, buy shoes for your new hedgehog, along with pajamas covered in rings, a T-shirt, and a shiny gold ring that attaches to his paws. And because you’re looking at a stuffed animal in 2020, you can also get a sound chip implanted in your Sonic that will play one of five different phrases from the movie as read by Ben Schwartz.

There’s also a deluxe gift set that comes with the ring, shoes, and chip in one package.

Build-A-Bear released a different Sonic plush all the way back in 2016, but this updated version looks more like the movie version of the hedgehog. That means we’re thankful that the creepy, toothy creature that was in the original trailer is no more, as it would make an even creepier stuffed animal.

Unfortunately, it seems that the Sonic Build-A-Bear is a hot commodity; he’s not currently available online and seems to be out of stock at most if not all Build-A-Bear stores. Your best bet is to keep an eye on the main product page, which will let you know when it comes back in stock. There’s also a tool to check the inventory in the stores in your area. Or, you know, you could just waltz into your local Build-a-Bear and get lucky.
