Sophie Turner Wasn't Allowed to Wash Her Hair While Filming Game of Thrones
It may have been bittersweet for Sophie Turner when Game of Thrones wrapped filming its final season, but there’s one thing she’s not sad to leave behind: dirty hair.
“Well, for the first few seasons I was allowed to wash my hair because I was an aristocratic young girl. Towards season 5 they started asking me to not wash my hair and it was really disgusting,” Turner, 22, who plays Sansa Stark on the hit HBO show, told InStyle.
She added, “[It was] really itchy! Also, we would have the snow machines going so we would have little snow paper particles that would get stuck in the grease. It was disgusting.”
But eventually, Turner admits she switched over to wearing wigs to save her hair from damage (and excessive grease!).

“Now I wear I wigs so I can wash my hair whenever I want, which is nice. But yes, for a couple of years I was living with pretty greasy hair,” Turner said.
Still, she even without a good shampoo, Turner still prefers using her real hair when channeling characters for a role.
“It’s really empowering thing to use your hair for roles,” she previously told PEOPLE. “When you’re wearing a wig, it gives a sense of momentary transformation and it doesn’t let you really commit to a role. So I try to really use my own hair.”

And her ever-changing hair colors — from blonde to red to black — helped boost her confidence. “As a redhead, I was originally really shy. I was 13 and changed my hair from blonde to red [for the show] and I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is so weird, this is not me’,” she told us.
“But my role in Game of Thrones went from being a very vulnerable and insecure young girl to being a powerful woman who is very confident in herself and very empowered. So whenever I think of my red hair, I relate it to such a strong woman.”
Game of Thrones returns April 14 on HBO.
