The long-held rivalry between Star Wars and Star Trek had another opportunity to manifest itself this weekend.
A tweet from NASA sent on Friday noted a particularly recognisable formation on the surface of Mars, reminiscent of the Star Fleet insignia from Star Trek.

There's certainly a likeness there, one which William Shatner immediately leapt upon, tagging in the official @StarWars with his remarks.
“Hey @starwars! Will you hurry up your Rebel Scums? We beat you!” crowed Captain James Tiberius Kirk.
Mark Hamill quickly hit back: “Looks like a boomerang to me. #Meh.”
Clearly keen to have the last word, Shatner warned: “Don’t be jelly, Mark.”
It's far from the first time that Shatner and Hamill have tussled online in the past – they frequently trade blows on Twitter, often just skirting the edge of civility.
Happy to know that the next generation of youth will be deathly afraid of you. You have become your father! 😘🤣 Seriously, congratulations on the role. 👍🏻 https://t.co/88Z46dLDBJ— William Shatner (@WilliamShatner) June 4, 2019
🤣 Thanks, Bill. It wouldn't be as special without a classic Shatner-burn from you!— Mark Hamill (@HamillHimself) February 22, 2018
