LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) _ Stericycle Inc. (SRCL) on Thursday reported a first-quarter loss of $37.8 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.
On a per-share basis, the Lake Forest, Illinois-based company said it had a loss of 42 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs and amortization costs, were 57 cents per share.
The results fell short of Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 87 cents per share.
The medical waste management company posted revenue of $830.1 million in the period, which also missed Street forecasts. Seven analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $864.1 million.
Stericycle shares have risen 56% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has risen 16%. In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, shares hit $57.24, a decrease of nearly 4% in the last 12 months.
