On a per-share basis, the The Woodlands, Texas-based company said it had net income of 7 cents.
The civil construction company posted revenue of $223.9 million in the period.
Sterling Construction shares have increased 27% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Monday, shares hit $13.84, an increase of 22% in the last 12 months.
