Miss Universe Pageant Says Steve Harvey Did Not Mix Up National Costume Winner in Shocking, Confusing Twist

The Miss Universe organization tweeted out a correction Sunday night, claiming that Steve Harvey, and their teleprompter, was in fact correct when he declared Miss Philippines Gazini Ganados the winner of this year's National Costume category.

The tweet did not, however, explain why Miss Malaysia Shweta Sekhon, dressed in her full regalia, was on stage with Harvey to accept the honor. Nor did they explain a previous, since-deleted tweet congratulating Sekhon for winning.
Another Miss Universe pageant, another embarrassing mix-up when it comes to announcing a winner.
On Sunday's broadcast of the Miss Universe pageant, host Steve Harvey announced the wrong National Costume winner after a teleprompter mishap. The mix-up, this time around, wasn't nearly as dramatic as when he announced the wrong Miss Universe in 2015.
The 62-year-old comic, who was hosting for the fifth year in a row, inadvertently announced the wrong contestant as the winner of the National Costume category, and was corrected by the real winner.
"Earlier this week, all the contestants competed in a National Costume contest," Harvey explained. "Here's a look at the winner, Miss Philippines."
However, the real winner was, in reality, Miss Malaysia Shweta Sekhon, who took to the stage in a truly jaw-dropping ornate gown that represented the culture and traditions of her country.
Sekhon asked Harvey for the mic and quickly made sure to correct the mistake, explaining, "It's not Philippines, it's Malaysia."
Harvey was quick to explain that this mishap was not, in fact, his fault, but stemmed to a teleprompter mistake.
"Well, let me explain something, I just read that in the teleprompter," Harvey said, before turning to the producers in the control booth. "Y'all gotta quit doin' this to me. I can read! They are trying to fix it now, but this is what they did to me back in 2015."
"This is Malaysia," Harvey added, having learned from the mistake. "I really love this national costume of Malaysia."
Harvey later joked, after she explained the significance behind her gorgeous costume, that he was "scared to say your name," presumably fearing yet another mixup.
This wasn't Harvey's only controversial moment of the night. The comic also got slammed on Twitter while talking with Miss Colombia Gabriela Tafur, where he joked about the infamous 2015 snafu, and she said that he was "forgiven."
"You've forgiven me [but] the cartel has not," Harvey quipped. "They're not handling it the same way."
While it may have been an off-the-cuff joke from Harvey, the comment immediately sparked some backlash from critics who took to Twitter to slam the comic for his remark, which many felt was offensive and inappropriate.
