Stocks open mixed; Apple jumps

NEW YORK (AP) -- The stock market was little changed in early trading, with few corporate earnings or economic reports to sway investors.

The Dow Jones industrial average edged up 12 points to 15,463 shortly after the market opened Monday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell a point to 1,708. The Nasdaq composite rose six points to 3,780.

Positive news emerged from China as a manufacturing survey in the world's second-largest economy found that activity rose to a six-month high in August.

Apple rose $24, or 5 percent, $491.60 after it said shoppers had snapped up 9 million of the newest iPhones since the devices rolled out Friday.

Investors will focus on the U.S. housing market this week. Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller releases its home price index Tuesday. Major builders will announce earnings.
