Stocks Selloff Tuesday, Indexes Close Lower

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,027.07 on Tuesday with a loss of 799.36 points or -3.10%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,700.06 for a loss of 90.31 points or -3.24%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,158.43 for a loss of 283.09 points or -3.80%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 20.59 for a gain of 4.15 points or 25.24%.

Tuesday's market movers

A flattening yield curve was a factor in the day's losses, while investors also digested more details on the U.S. and China's agreement with some skepticism. The two-year to 10-year Treasury spread tightened to its narrowest range in 11 years at 13 basis points. On Monday, the three-year Treasury yield also exceeded the five-year.

There were no major reports on the economic calendar Tuesday. The Treasury held auctions for four-week bills at a rate of 2.320% and 52-week bills at a rate of 2.635%.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,480.76 for a loss of 68.20 points or -4.40%. The S&P 600 closed at 925.06 for a loss of 44.71 points or -4.61%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,239.13 for a loss of 418.63 points or -4.33%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,422.71 for a loss of 362.23 points or -3.70%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,826.62 for a loss of 68.70 points or -3.62%; the S&P 100 at 1,197.48 for a loss of 41.15 points or -3.32%; the Russell 3000 at 1,589.08 for a loss of 54.82 points or -3.33%; the Russell 1000 at 1,492.29 for a loss of 50.16 points or -3.25%; the Wilshire 5000 at 27,796.79 for a loss of 971.77 points or -3.38%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 689.02 for a loss of 14.38 points or -2.04%.
