Ross and Matt Duffer have revealed the inspirations behind Stranger Things' upcoming third season.

The massively popular Netflix show echoes the creators' love for science-fiction and horror, with Steven Spielberg's E.T: the Extra Terrestrial shining through in the early episodes, but the latest batch of adventures for the kids of Hawkins are influenced by some surprising titles.

In conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Ross admitted: "We would say that this is our most unapologetically fun season. Yet at the same time, it is also our most horrifying and intense season.

"It's this wild mix of tones that we think really sets this season apart."

The filmmaking siblings then listed the most influential films/artists on the show's third season.

We have: the icily iconic horror movie The Thing, as well as Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Romancing the Stone, Midnight Run and 1982's teen-drama Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

On top of that, the movies of body-horror master David Cronenberg were also included.

Meanwhile, Ross previously teased that, aesthetically, the new season will have a "very different" feel to the first two.

"Everyone is going to this new mall, seeing movies, and, of course, the Hawkins pool is open for business. I think there'll be a sense of fun and joy," he added.

Stranger Things returns for its third season on Netflix on July 4. Seasons 1 and 2 are available for streaming now.
