Should Stratus Properties (NASDAQ:STRS) Be Disappointed With Their 75% Profit?

When we invest, we're generally looking for stocks that outperform the market average. And the truth is, you can make significant gains if you buy good quality businesses at the right price. To wit, the Stratus Properties share price has climbed 75% in five years, easily topping the market return of 38% (ignoring dividends).

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Stratus Properties's earnings per share are down 39% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years. This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.

It is not great to see that revenue has dropped by 2.1% per year over five years. It certainly surprises us that the share price is up, but perhaps a closer examination of the data will yield answers.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Stratus Properties's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Stratus Properties hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of 81% exceeds its share price return of 75%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.

A Different Perspective

Stratus Properties shareholders are down 12% for the year, but the market itself is up 2.4%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 13%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering.
