Strong margins drive Amazon higher

New Businesses Lift Profitability

Amazon.com's fourth-quarter earnings and revenue missed expectations. But its gross margin rose to 24 percent from 22 percent as the company grew in more lucrative areas like cloud computing. Investors are focusing on that number, sending AMZN higher by 8 percent before the bell on my tradeMONSTER platform.

Isis Climbs on FDA Marketing Nod

Isis Pharmaceuticals received permission from the United States Food & Drug Administration to market Kynamro for patients with a genetic order causing extremely high cholesterol levels. The drug's potential market is estimated at $400 million a year. ISIS gains 9 percent in early trading.

Strong Results, Outlook Lift Multimedia Games

Multimedia Games earned $0.24 a share on revenue of $44.3 million. Analysts had only expected $0.13 and $39.9 million, respectively. The maker of casino games also raised its full-year guidance, and MGAM is up 16 percent in the premarket.
