SMALLER AID REQUESTED: Government-controlled mortgage giant Freddie Mac requested $19 million in additional federal aid during the first quarter, far less than the $146 million it received during the final quarter of 2011. The company received $7.6 billion for all of 2011.
LOSS IN FIRST QUARTER: Freddie reported that its net loss was $1.2 billion, or 38 cents a share, in the January-March period. That compares with a net loss of $929 million, or 29 cents a share, in the first quarter of 2011.
BIG BAILOUT: Taxpayers have spent about $170 billion to rescue Freddie and larger sibling Fannie Mae, which veered toward collapse in 2008 after piling up massive losses on risky mortgages.
