Some stocks are best avoided. It hits us in the gut when we see fellow investors suffer a loss. Imagine if you held Taoping Inc. (NASDAQ:TAOP) for half a decade as the share price tanked 89%. And we doubt long term believers are the only worried holders, since the stock price has declined 63% over the last twelve months. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 39% in the last 90 days.

We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Taoping became profitable within the last five years. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.

Arguably, the revenue drop of 34% a year for half a decade suggests that the company can't grow in the long term. That could explain the weak share price.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 1.0% in the twelve months, Taoping shareholders did even worse, losing 63%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 36% over the last half decade. We realise that Buffett has said investors should 'buy when there is blood on the streets', but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality businesses. Before forming an opinion on Taoping you might want to consider these 3 valuation metrics.
