The TAT Technologies (NASDAQ:TATT) Share Price Is Down 41% So Some Shareholders Are Getting Worried

Simply Wall St

As an investor its worth striving to ensure your overall portfolio beats the market average. But if you try your hand at stock picking, your risk returning less than the market. We regret to report that long term TAT Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:TATT) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 41% in three years, versus a market return of about 52%. The more recent news is of little comfort, with the share price down 22% in a year. The good news is that the stock is up 2.2% in the last week.

TAT Technologies isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Over the last three years, TAT Technologies's revenue dropped 1.4% per year. That is not a good result. The stock has disappointed holders over the last three years, falling 16%, annualized. That makes sense given the lack of either profits or revenue growth. However, in this kind of situation you can sometimes find opportunity, where sentiment is negative but the company is actually making good progress.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We've already covered TAT Technologies's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Its history of dividend payouts mean that TAT Technologies's TSR, which was a 39% drop over the last 3 years, was not as bad as the share price return.

A Different Perspective

TAT Technologies shareholders are down 22% for the year, but the market itself is up 27%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 2.9% over the last half decade. We realise that Buffett has said investors should 'buy when there is blood on the streets', but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand TAT Technologies better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for TAT Technologies (1 shouldn't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
