Texas: Grand Galveston mansion for sale

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) -- A grand Victorian mansion in Galveston that became a museum is up for sale. But until the end of the month, there is only one possible buyer.

The Galveston Historical Foundation has exclusive right until the end of June to raise $3 million to buy the house called The Bishop's Palace from the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese.

W. Dwayne Jones, foundation executive director, says that so far, they have raised about $2.3 million.

The stone house featuring four turrets was built in 1892 for lawyer and lobbyist Col. Walter Greshams. Galvestonians purchased the house in 1921 as a residence for Bishop Christopher Bryne, earning the structure its current name.

The house became a museum in 1962. It gets around 50,000 visitors a year.
