There's no mystery here: How to get Michelle Pfeiffer's 'Orient Express' vintage waves
Michelle Pfeiffer is one of a few actresses who has had multiple iconic movie hairstyles. Remember her blond bob with bangs in Scarface? Classic. What about her perfect blowout in What Lies Beneath. Flawless. Well, the 59-year-old can add another look to her list of memorable film hairdos.
In Murder on the Orient Express, Pfeiffer wears well-coiffed vintage waves that are the perfect accessory for this film, which is set in 1934. The layers and the deep curl pattern not only accentuate her facial features, but add to her “Who done it?” expression.
Eager to learn how to copy Pfeiffer’s Orient Express ‘do, we asked Kérastase consulting hairstylist Matt Fugate to show us how it’s done. Watch the video above for a few tricks to up your curling iron skills!
Step-by-step instructions:
1. Create a deep side part on the left side (or whichever side is your preference).
2. Roll, pin, and secure top portion to set curl. If your hair type is fine and lacks texture, you can use a curling iron to easily achieve a pin curl.
3. Wrap large pieces of hair around a barrel curling iron and hold. Repeat this around entire bottom section. Fugate’s tool of choice: Hot Tools Professional Gold Marcel 1 ¼ inch Curling Iron.
4. Use a large paddle brush such as the Mason Pearson Detangler Hair Brush to brush out curls into loose waves.
5. Unclip top portion and create individual waves with the curling iron. Pro tip: Wrap hair towards your face to achieve finger-wave shape.
6. Finish with a few spritzes of Kérastase Elixir Ultime Beautifying Oil Mist to add shine and smooth flyaways.
Makeup details: Sephora PRO artist Chris Sams highlighted under eyes, center of the face, and cheekbones using Sephora Collection Bright Future Gel Serum Concealer. Then he set the face with Laura Mercier Translucent Powder to remove unwanted shine. To softly define crease and bottom lash line, the makeup artist used apply Mushroom from the Sephora Collection Pro Cool Palette with a Sephora Collection Pro Tapered Crease Brush #19. Sams outlined the top lash line with Marc Jacob Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Blacquer, making sure the line is thicker at the outer corner and tapers in. A few coats of Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara thickened and darkened lashes. To complete the look, he filled in lips with Make Up For Ever Artist Rouge Lipstick C-103. Pro tip: Use a liner 2-3 shaders darker (try Givenchy Lip Liner – 8) than the lipstick to create the illusion of more volume.
