Those who invested in Equity Bancshares (NASDAQ:EQBK) three years ago are up 26%

·2 min read

Buying a low-cost index fund will get you the average market return. But if you invest in individual stocks, some are likely to underperform. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the Equity Bancshares, Inc. (NASDAQ:EQBK) share price is up 25% in the last three years, that falls short of the market return. Zooming in, the stock is up just 1.7% in the last year.

Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During three years of share price growth, Equity Bancshares moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd expect the share price to be up.

The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Equity Bancshares shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 2.7% over one year. And that does include the dividend. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 1.4% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Equity Bancshares (at least 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.

Of course Equity Bancshares may not be the best stock to buy. So you may wish to see this free collection of growth stocks.
