Sony is preparing to kick off its Spider-Man villainverse with Venom, and with filming underway, Tom Hardy has shared another image.

Away from the candy-coated world of the MCU, Sony is tackling a much darker world of Spider-Man foes with Venom at the forefront.

Taking to Twitter, the 40-year-old actor posted yet another brooding black and white shot while he was hard at work.

Still not giving any of the plot away, Tom's hashtag at least confirms that he's actually on the set of the movie.

Tom's no stranger to playing supervillains either, having previously stuck on a mask to play Bane in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises.

However, instead of being an out-and-out bad guy, Hardy's portrayal of Eddie Brock in Venom is expected to elevate him to anti hero status.

Charting the rise and fall of Brock as he battles with a sadistic alien entity, Venom will also stars the likes of Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed.

Also introducing fan-favourite Spidey rogue Carnage, all signs point to Venom being a bloodthirsty affair for all involved.

Tom's taking over from Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3, but we should also remember that a Venom movie has been touted ever since Sam Raimi rounded off his Spider-Man trilogy in 2007.

Directed by Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer, the film's hoping for a gritty R-rated movie that will be inspired by horror movies from the likes of John Carpenter and David Cronenberg.

All being well, Venom will help kickstart the villainverse and lead into the upcoming Silver and Black as well as potential Morbius and Sinister Six movies.

Tom's yet to show off his finalised Venom suit, but it surely won't be long until we see him in action as the alien symbiote.

Venom is slated for an October 5, 2018 release.
