Tony Stewart teases a possible Xfinity Series appearance or two
Have we not seen the last of Tony Stewart in NASCAR’s top three series?
The three-time Cup Series champion revealed Wednesday that he is interested in running a road course race in the Xfinity Series. Stewart brought it up at Aric Almirola’s introductory press conference when the topic of possible Xfinity Series races for Almirola arose.
Stewart-Haas Racing announced earlier this fall that it had merged with Biagi-DenBeste Racing in the Xfinity Series. Almirola has driven for Biagi-DenBeste in the Xfinity Series.
“We’ll work on that,” Stewart said when Almirola asked about Xfinity races. “I might want to drive it at some point even. You guys act like you don’t need something shocking today to write. There are actually some road course races that I might be interested in running. We’ve actually discussed it in-house here, but we don’t have anything near worth announcing by any means, but there are some really cool races, especially Charlotte having a road course race next year. I mean, there might be some opportunities that might be a little bit fun for me to come out and dust things off a little bit.”
While he’s traversed the country doing dirt track races this year, Stewart hasn’t driven in NASCAR since he retired from the Cup Series at the end of the 2016 season. With Dale Earnhardt Jr. set to drive in an Xfinity Series race or two in 2018 following his retirement from the Cup Series, we’re wondering what we can do to get Junior and Stewart to run the same second-tier race next season. That would be pretty fun, don’t you think?
