TWST: Can you begin with a brief introduction to Crow Point, including some highlights from the firm's history and a bit about each of your roles there?
Mr. DeCaprio: My partner Tim O'Brien and I founded Crow Point in 2006. We both left what was then known as Evergreen Investments, which is now Wells Fargo Advantage Funds. In December of this year, one of our other former colleagues from Evergreen, Amit Chandra, joined us. He was the CIO of the quantitative strategies team at a division of Wells Fargo.
The focus of the firm is on global equity and global equity income opportunities. We have had historically an expertise in the higher income'producing sectors of the marketplace, and we wanted to maintain our focus there. In addition to a preference for income, we also have a preference for alternative investments and hedged strategies. We have two publicly traded mutual funds in the marketplace right now under our own banner, and both of those would be classified as alternative mutual funds. We think the alternative space is the direction that the market is going in, and we want make sure we have products to offer to that market segment.
TWST: How would you describe your investment philosophy?
Mr. DeCaprio: The core philosophy of the firm is that long-term outperformance comes from sidestepping the big downdrafts in the marketplace, so we focus a lot on preservation of capital and avoiding losses...
