The Toyota Land Cruiser is a legend in the SUV world. First introduced in 1951 as a simple, utilitarian 4x4, it's risen to legendary heights, and remains one of the most capable new SUVs you can buy. Toyota announced today that it recently sold its 10 millionth Land Cruiser, further cementing the truck's iconic status.

If you need some perspective on just how many Land Cruisers are out there, just consider that Subaru just crossed the barrier for 10 million cars sold in America. That's cars in total, not just a single model.

Launched as the inline-six-powered BJ before acquiring the Land Cruiser name in 1954, the truck has been sold in 170 countries and regions worldwide, serving all sorts of duties from military transport to personal off-roading machines to purpose-built rally raid trucks. It's seen several iterations and refreshes, and the US-spec model currently sports a 5.7-liter V-8 engine making 381 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque.

While 10 million Land Cruisers is certainly a lot, it doesn't come close to touching Toyota's best-selling model, the Corolla, which has sold well over 40 million examples. We hope it sticks around for at least a little while longer.
