Toyota Working on GT 86 Hybrid

Jeff Perez

Everyone’s favorite sportscar– the Toyota GT86/Scion FR-S –is getting ready to show off something special in the near future. A hybrid powertrain, that’s right, on a GT 86.

Talking with Autocar at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show, director Koei Saga said that “The development work is quite advanced now, so if the green light is given, we are ready to do it.” Other details weren’t dished out on the project just yet, but Saga hinted that this hybrid technology could be pulled from both Toyota road and race cars:

“We are quite prepared because we do have a hybrid system that we can use for that kind of vehicle, utilizing the production passenger car hybrid system, and we also have the pure race-oriented hybrid system.”

Neither power figures nor a green light have officially been dubbed for such a project, but if a hybrid 86 does hit the production line, we won’t expect it for another few years (2015/2016).
