Transformer fire causes power failure in Prague

Explosion, fire in transformer cause massive power failure in Czech capital

PRAGUE (AP) -- Czech authorities say they are investigating an overnight explosion and fire in a transformer in Prague that caused a power failure in large sections of the capital.

Petr Holubec of the PRE power distribution company says about a third of the more than 1 million people who live in Prague were without electricity for up to 90 minutes.

Spokeswoman for the grid operator CEPS Tereza Soukupova says nobody was injured in the blast and fire. Soukupova said Wednesday authorities still don't know the cause.

The incident occurred about an hour before midnight Tuesday in the southeastern part of the city.
