Transocean makes a big acquisition, Amazon launches Hindi site, new competition for Tesla

Here’s a look at some of the companies the Yahoo Finance team will be watching for you today.

Transocean is buying offshore drilling company Ocean Rig for $2.7 billion. The deal will be funded through a combination of cash and financing through Citi Group. Transocean says the deal will enhance its position as the leader in drilling in harsh environments.

Amazon is stepping up its battle to win over customers in India. The retail giant just launched a Hindi-language shopping site and app, for Android phones. None of India’s other big e-commerce sites offer a Hindi version. The move is seen as an effort to hold off challenger Flipkart, which was recently purchased by Walmart for $16 billion.

There’s pressure today on Tesla and it comes from Germany. Mercedes Benz is unveiling an electric SUV today. The EQC can travel up to 310 miles on a single charge, and can go from zero to 60 in under five seconds. Despite the reveal today, the new SUV won’t be available for sale until next year.

Ford is denying a report that it plans to end production of one of its signature cars. The automaker says the Mondeo remains a “core part” of its product line-up in Europe. And it plans to upgrade the model, including an enhanced hybrid version. Just last week, Ford dropped plans to import a small crossover from China called the “focus active” because of tariffs.

Facebook is apologizing for an outage that hit some users around the world on Labor Day. The company is blaming a “networking issue” for stopping some users from being able to access Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. It’s not clear what that issue was. Facebook says the problems lasted for about 90 minutes.
