How to Travel to Mykonos Like Jackie O.

From Town & Country

When Jackie Kennedy famously arrived in Mykonos in 1961, she was greeted by the mayor, famous dignitaries, and, notably, a large white pelican named Petros. Though it is impossible for modern jet-setters to replicate such an entrance, the newly redesigned Mykonos Airport might come close.

Set to open in 2021, the light, airy design was inspired by traditional Cycladic architecture (Think: The stunningly soft white buildings frequently associated with the Greek islands). Soothing courtyards with trees and breezeways will make way to a completely reworked airport, currently a maze-like assemblage of numerous renovations.

The architects and designers behind the new building, K-Studio and Betaplan, made sure to load up on the modern conveniences. After all, Dimitris Karampatakis, Antonis Tzortzis, Michalis Skitsas of K-Studio, who also designed Greece’s luxurious Vora Villas in Santorini, are sensitive to the importance of making these highly traversed locations double as ambassadors to the country. They envisioned a place “that welcomes visitors and bids them farewell with the characteristic warmth and optimism of the island," where check-in is seamless and perfectly sunlit.

They aren’t alone—the developer behind the project, Fraport Greece, reported that the total renovations will cost 25 million euros (approximately $28 million), and that they hope to create “a worthy gateway to this outstanding island.”

The airport's grand reveal was quickly followed by the announcement of a new semi-private jet service. Aero is now offering nonstop flights between Ibiza and Mykonos from mid-July to mid-August. Though island-hopping has always been a prized activity among the elite, in practice it is far more elegant if you have a private jet. Aero will bridge the gap with its semi-private model, where flights will cost around $1,400.

Sipping an iced coffee beneath an olive tree waiting on a private jet to Ibiza sounds just like the sort of thing to earn Jackie's approval. As for the personal pelican greeter? Perhaps in 2025.
