WASHINGTON (AP) -- Treasury Secretary Jack Lew is meeting on Capitol Hill Friday with House Speaker John Boehner and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

The Treasury Department says Lew is updating the House leaders separately on the state of the economy, both in the U.S. and abroad.

Lew returned recently from trips to Europe and China. While in Europe, he encouraged officials to promote more growth-friendly measures to counter the European debt crisis and to ease their austerity policies.

The meetings come one day after Lew told House and Senate committees the Obama administration is optimistic about a budget deal. He urged lawmakers to consider concessions that President Barack Obama made in the $3.8 trillion budget plan he unveiled Wednesday.
