Trentino receives international acclaim with Wine Star Award placing it among the leading wine areas of the world (Trentodoc).
NEW YORK, Nov. 2, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Trentino, Italy is named "Wine Region of the Year 2020" by Wine Enthusiast as part of the publication's annual Wine Star Awards. In a twenty-year-old tradition, Wine Enthusiast's editors honor people, wineries and destinations that have made significant contributions to the world of wine. This year, the team acknowledges Trentino with the prestigious award, recognizing it for its unique and diverse territory. "A true Wine Star the Trentino region is one of the most dynamic, multifaceted quality terroir-driven wine producing areas in the world today," comments Adam Strum, C.E.O. and Publisher of Wine Enthusiast. "With it's delicious fresh and fruity Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and elegant Pinot Nero, and its spectacular sub region Trento DOC which produces renowned world class sparkling wines, Trentino is unrivaled in Italy for its diversity."
Boasting 10,000 hectares and representing just 1.6% of the vine-covered area in Italy, Trentino produces internationally acclaimed wines thanks to the work of 164 wineries and 7,000 winemakers, who make still wines from native and international grape varieties, and Trentodoc sparkling wines.
Pietro Patton, President of the Consorzio Vini del Trentino: "We are highly satisfied with this result. Being named "Wine Region of the Year" is a great opportunity that allows us to promote our province, our identity, and our values. It proves how our roots, in particular the long-standing wine tradition, represents an extraordinarily modern approach to presenting ourselves abroad. Moreover, our production of still wines is an important factor for the growth of Trentino-based companies."
"This prestigious award," adds President of Istituto Trento Doc, Enrico Zanoni, "highlights the importance of Trentodoc sparkling wine as a representation of the territory. The award acknowledges the commitment of all the producers who have worked so hard to establish its name over the years."
In the region of Trentino, 70% of the land can be found at over 3,200 feet, 20% above 6,500 feet, and 94 peaks exceeding 9,800 feet in altitude. Give this unique environment, winemakers grow grapes (77% white and 23% red overall) often on small parcels of land amid the mountains. Trentino produces one million hectolitres of wine annually, of which 80% is used to produce DOC wine; this is one of the highest percentages of use on a national scale.
The wineries of Trentino continue to play an increasingly prominent role in the conversation of high-quality and sustainability. By applying the principles of integrated viticulture in the vineyard and throughout the production process, the wineries are actively involved in protecting the environment, their workers, and the consumers. A national quality system of integrated production, SQNPI, is practiced by 80% of the wineries in Trentino, the only example of a regional model of sustainable agriculture in Italy, and 12% practice organic farming methods. The uniqueness of Trentino wines has always played an important role in their international distribution and they are currently available in 89 different countries worldwide, most widely in the US, Germany and the UK.
About Trentodoc: Founded in 1984, the Istituto Trentodoc promotes and safeguards the wines of Trentodoc, a denomination that now represents 57 sparkling wine producers from the Trentino region in northern Italy. Giulio Ferrari first began producing sparkling wine there in 1902 after visiting the Champagne region of France. The Trentodoc denomination was established in 1993 and is the first Italian DOC to produce only Classic Method sparkling wines. In 2007, the collective Trentodoc trademark was created, allowing the sparkling wines of Trentino designated as Trento D.O.C. to use it, thereby relaying the origin, connection with the territory, and excellence of Italy's unique sparkling wine.
