Trian builds PepsiCo stake

Trian Fund Management holds about $1.4 bil in PepsiCo (PEP) stock and $1.3 bil in Mondelez (MDLZ), a spinoff of Kraft Foods (KRFT), sources told CNBC. Trian, run by activist investor Nelson Peltz, reported stakes of $270 mil in Pepsi and $500 mil in Mondelez at the end of '12. Peltz may want to merge the 2 firms — or have Pepsi sell its huge snack division to Mondelez, which owns Oreo, Cadbury and Trident. Pepsi rose 1.9% to a new closing high after rising 3% Thu. on better-than-expected EPS. Mondelez shot up 5.3%.
