The President Makes Clear He Really Hates Stephen Colbert

Apparently our president has nothing more important to do than to take time out of his busy (?) day and aim criticism at Stephen Colbert. In a new interview with Time magazine, Donald Trump proves he really does watch too much TV and takes jokes aimed at him far too seriously.

One assumes Trump had Colbert’s crude joke on May 1 in mind when he interrupted an interview with Time to gratuitously bring up the subject of the host of The Late Show: “You see a no-talent guy like Colbert,” says the president. “There’s nothing funny about what he says. And what he says is filthy. And you have kids watching. And it only builds up my base. It only helps me, people like him.”

Not content to criticize Colbert’s taste in jokes, Trump gave the host what for him is the ultimate in insults: the suggestion that he’s a loser, that his ratings aren’t as high as — you know, a show like The Apprentice when Trump was hosting it: “The guy was dying [in the ratings]. By the way, they were going to take him off television, then he started attacking me and he started doing better. But his show was dying.”

Does it really bear mentioning that, by the way, CBS was not “going to take him off the air”? Are we so used to this kind of blithe lying that it seems foolish to point it out in this showbiz-y context? No, actually, I think it does bear mentioning. In the same interview, Trump goes after the TV news channels, with particular animus toward CNN’s Don Lemon (“the dumbest person in broadcasting”) and Chris Cuomo (“a chained lunatic”).

The president also updates us on his TV habits. “For instance, I don’t watch CNN. I don’t watch MSNBC. [Joe] Scarborough used to treat me great.” What does he watch? Shocker: “I do watch Fox in the morning, and [Fox and Friends’] ratings have gone through the roof because everyone knows I’m watching Fox.”

Let’s see what Colbert has to say about this tonight.
