TWA Hotel swings open its doors at New York City's JFK Airport

Storied American airline brand Trans World Airlines — which you probably know as TWA provided you are over the age of 30 — is about to soar once again, but absent a full fleet of jets and only boasting one destination.

On May 15, the TWA Hotel will swing open its doors at New York’s John F. Kennedy’s Airport — the first on-site airport hotel at JFK Airport. The landmark building originally opened in 1962 and shuttered in 2001 along with its eponymous airline. The iconic Eero Saarinen-designed building will boast 512 1960s-inspired rooms that harken back to the golden age of flying.

It also features the Instagram pic friendly sunken lounge, which will fire off a host of mid-century-esque cocktails. The hotel will have six restaurants, a food hall, a Warby Parker pop up store, and a 10,000-square-foot fitness center.

The cost per room: a reasonable $249 a night.

The TWA Hotel is the brainchild of resident aviation fan, former Delta baggage handler, long-time hotel industry executive and MCR Development CEO Tyler Morse. MCR Development — which has a development portfolio of 86 hotels in 26 states — was awarded the contract to build TWA Hotel in 2015.

“This was a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Morse told Yahoo Finance about the $265 million development project. “You will feel like you are in 1962, minus the cigarette smoke.”

Morse said a “remarkable” number of former TWA employees (he estimates the number at 22,000 TWA employees who are still alive) have plunked down some cash to stay in the first few days of the hotel being opened.

Curious on how you will sleep at a hotel that is literally inside a busy airport? Have no fear, said Morse — the windows in the rooms are made from special five-inch glass.

“You will sleep like a baby,” Morse promises.
