I Took A Receipt I Had For Groceries From 2020, Compared Them With The Prices From 2022, And Then Cried

If you're like me, you've noticed inflation most at the grocery store. But even though we know things have gone up, how much have they gone up specifically?

NBC

I decided to go onto my Target app and see the oldest receipt it had saved. It's one from August 7, 2020, almost exactly two years ago.

Target

I wanted to make the exact same grocery order again and see what the difference was in what it cost.

IFC

And, in the interest of science, I'll be comparing prices of the exact same products from the exact same Target store.

I will, however, be doing it all through the Target app since, in the past two years, I have moved far away from the store I did my 2020 order at.

Here's our full receipt. We'll break it down item by item below.

Screenshot of a receipt

Now, the first two things on my receipt, the two jars of coconut and the dried ginger, it doesn't look like they sell anymore, so we're going to start with the plastic wrap. On August 7, 2020, 200 square feet of plastic wrap was $1.99. Now, that same container of plastic wrap costs...$2.39!

Screen shot of a receipt

In two years, the price of this plastic wrap has gone up 40 cents.

Target

The second thing on our list is 96 ounces of unsweetened almond milk. On August 7, 2020, this almond milk cost $4.29. As of August 3, 2022, this almond milk now costs...$4.79

Screen shot of a receipt

In two years, the price of this almond milk has gone up 50 cents.

Target

OK, next we've got my favorite nighttime snack, GoGo Squeez Applesauce. On August 7, 2020, a 12-pack of GoGo Squeez was $5.50. Now, it costs...$8.99

Screen shot of a receipt

In two years, the price of this 12-pack of GoGo Squeez was raised $3.49.

Target

Let's take a look at this sesame seed oil (which is spelled wrong on the Target app???) which I paid $4.89 for in 2020. The same five ounces of sesame oil costs $6.99 right now.

Screen shot of a receipt

This container of sesame oil has gone up $2.10 in the past two years. So far, my grocery bill would be $6.49 more now than in 2020.

Target

Next up, we've got a big ol' bottle of Gatorade that came in at a very thrifty price of 88 cents on my receipt in 2020. Now...it's $1.49.

Screen shot of a receipt

In two years, the price of this Gatorade has gone up 61 cents.

Target

Up next, a 90-count package of paper plates. I bought these in 2020 for $4.69. If I were to buy them from the same store today, they'd be $6.79.

Screen shot of a receipt

In two years, the price of these dinner plates has gone up $2.10.

Target

I bought a 3-pack of tri-colored bell peppers for $3.49 in 2020. They are now going for $3.69 today.

Screen shot of a receipt

In the past two years, the cost of this package of bell peppers went up 20 cents. So far, my grocery bill is $9.50 more expensive in 2022 than in 2020.

Target

Now we've got a 42-count pack of paper bowls. In 2020, they cost me $3.89, but in 2022, they're now $3.99.

Screen shot of a receipt

Can someone who's good at economics please explain how paper plates went up over two dollars and paper bowls have only gone up 10 cents???

Target

Next, I got a can of chicken noodle soup. On August 7, 2020, it was $1.99. Now, according to the Target app, it's $2.49.

Screen shot of a receipt

In the past two years, this soup has gone up 50 cents.

Target

In 2020, I bought a pound of cherries (a fruit I always associate with being expensive and delicious). In August 2020, they were $3.99. In August 2022, they're $5.59.

Screen shot of a receipt

Cherries have gone up $1.60 in the past two years.

Target

Here's a big one. I bought this Swiffer refill bundle in 2020 for $11.99. As of August 3, 2022, it is now $15.49.

Screen shot of a receipt

This Swiffer bundle has risen in price $3.50 in the past two years. We are now at my grocery bill being $15.20 more than it was in 2022 FOR THE SAME ITEMS!!!!

Target

IDK what it is, but this Fruit Punch flavor Gatorade rose from 88 cents to $1.39 in 2022 (the Glacier Freeze flavor, if you remember, has risen to $1.49).

Screen shot of a receipt

This flavor rose 51 cents in the past two years.

Target

WE HAVE A PRICE THAT WENT DOWN, PEOPLE. This Botan rice candy I bought in 2020 was $1.19 then, and 99 cents now.

Screen shot of a receipt

This candy went down 20 cents in the past two years, helping out my grocery bill and only making it $15.51 more expensive today than two years ago.

Target

ANOTHER ONE!!!!! This jar of pesto I purchased in 2020 for $3.59 is now only $3.19 at the store.

Screen shot of a receipt

Over the past two years, the cost of this jar of pesto has dropped 40 cents, making my grocery bill only $15.11 more expensive than 2020.

Target

Only a few more items left. In 2020, I purchased this two-pound bag of rice for $3.59. As of August 3, 2022, it is $3.99.

Screen shot of a receipt

Unfortunately, this negates my 40-cent savings in pesto and brings my grocery bill up to $15.51 more expensive than 2020.

Target

Next up, we've got a 14-pound bag of dry dog food (beef flavored is the only kind my dog, Apollo, likes). During this shopping trip on August 7, 2020, it was $14.49. Now, it costs $17.19.

Screen shot of a receipt

This bag of dog food is $2.70 more expensive than it was in 2020, making my grocery bill $18.21 more than it was in 2020.

Target

I bought this jar of Crescent rolls in 2020 for $2.19. They are now $3.59.

Screen shot of a receipt

That makes them $1.40 more than they were in 2020. My grocery bill would now be $19.61 more than it was in 2020.

Target

The last thing on my receipt is a 6-count box of strawberry fruit bars. On my 2020 shopping trip, they were $3.50. They are now $5.29.

Screen shot of a receipt

That makes these fruit bars $1.79 more expensive than they were in 2020. That means...

Target

In 2022, my grocery bill would be $21.30 more expensive if I bought all of the exact same things at the exact same store. So while the average salary went up 3.4% in 2021 and 2.8% in 2022, this grocery bill has gone up 27.66% over the past two years.

KTLA

Thank you for coming with me on this unbelievably sad journey. To boost everybody's spirits, here is a photo of my dog, who I will have to ask to get a job soon if the price of dog food keeps going up.
