Grabbing an Uber is far cheaper than asking your parents for a lift in exchange for eight hours of household chores. But now, your go-to transportation app has gotten even more affordable thanks to today's launch of Express POOL, according to a company spokesperson.
You already know and love UberPOOL — the product that allows riders heading in the same direction to split the cost of one trip. To date, Uber has give almost one billion pool rides, but with a consistent number of available seats in each ride, the system isn't as sustainable or affordable as can be. As its first major update in three years since POOL's inception, Express is filling the gap by adopting more of a city bus model.
Walk to and from Express stations located throughout your city, and wait a maximum of one or two minutes for your ride to popular local destinations. The service is now available in San Francisco, Boston, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, San Diego, and Denver, and will roll out to other U.S. cities "later this quarter," which is code for "just in time for spring" when we'll want to be getting in a few extra minutes of fresh air anyways. We never thought we'd be able to thank Uber for also helping us get in our 10,000 steps.
The feature is located beside the UberPOOL button (first-timers will get another on-screen rundown). Once you've selected your ride, the app will determine the closest Express location for you to head down to, along with directions and your driver's estimated time of arrival. Mid-ride, you might want to skip the Insta scrolling, since Uber will then be locating your drop-off point along with walking directions to your final destination. City public transit can definitely take a few notes.
